Local Restaurants You Must Try
When you think of Sri Lankan cuisine, what comes to mind? Perhaps hoppers , string hoppers and spicy curries are your first thoughts. Many travelers rightly sense that these iconic Sri Lankan staples resemble classics from the neighboring country of Tamil Nadu in South India—and they would be right.

We invited local food blogger Ruzaina Hadgie to share her grandmother’s recommendations for the best authentic Sri Lankan eateries around the island. Having traveled around Sri Lanka on food explorations with Ruzaina, Grandma Hadgie is known within her circle for her deep passion and natural flair for cooking Sri Lankan food.
“I only like Sri Lankan food, but Sri Lanka has many different cultures offering different types of food. I can’t select just one. If you come here, you have to try the real, authentic places and not the watered-down eateries, where there is no spice or taste at all. Let me tell you a bit about my favorite places around Sri Lanka.”
Colombo
Best for: rotis, seafood curries, seaside dining
“Before big fancy restaurants came to Colombo... it was Nana’s at Galle Face that was the top spot. I remember coming here with my brother and sisters in our younger years and the food has always been the same as the past. Simple, delicious food.”
You should try:
- Kottu Roti—A shredded gothamba roti (fried flatbread), meat, and Jaffna curry powder. Choose any meat to go with, but chicken is amazing. One of the best in Colombo.
- Deep-fried river prawns—A must-try when in season, with red curry sauce.
- Snacks from neighborhood food kiosks—Accompany your meal with crispy, spicy and tangy isso wade (a small lentil patti with an onion relish, red curry sauce and a prawn on top), and acharu (pickled fruits). Enjoy by the sea.
Best for: Sri Lankan Muslim-style food, street food, Egg Roti, Biriyani
“We stopped by this restaurant years ago and have never looked back since. They always serve such good food. The closest to this experience of good street food is at AluthKade, a very popular night-time culinary destination in Colombo, but you can’t always go there—so Pilawoos is a good place. Their roast chicken and egg roti is a must try. It’s always better to eat it while it’s hot to get the real taste of melting egg in the roti, along with the crispy chicken and fresh onion sambal.”
